Eagle River is a small town within a larger city. Although Eagle River is considered to be part of the Anchorage Municipality, the town itself is about 11 miles north of Anchorage City. Eagle River is home to about 22,000 residents (2000 U.S. Census).  Eagle River offers amenities for another 8,000 people that live in outlying towns and villages such as Chugiak,  Birchwood, Peters Creek, Eklutna and Thunderbirds Fall. Eagle River is home to many Airforce and Army personnels. Many of Eagle River’s civilian residents commute to their Anchorage jobs.

Eagle River has much to offer in the way of sports:  indoor and outdoor soccer, softball, baseball,  football, basketball, swimming,  fishing, hiking, and cross country skiing. Biking is also a very popular in Eagle River and all of Alaska. Hard core bikers will even bike in the winter (with studded tires, of course). There is a bike trail that starts in Anchorage and rides along the Glenn Highway past Eagle River, all the way to Chugiak.

Eagle River is the central shopping hub between Wasilla,  Anchorage, and Palmer.  Its largest stores include a Super Wal-Mart, Fred Meyer and Carrs Safeway. If you are looking for entertainment in Eagle River, there is the movie theater, which reopened in 2006 with 6 screens, a great mix of restaurants, and of course the local coffee shops that add charm to this town. Annual community events include the Bear Paw Festival,  the Highland Games (held at the end of June), and  a great big Fourth of July Celebration.

Eagle River has a quite a number of public schools. Eagle River Schools are part of the Anchorage School District.  Homeschooling, which is a popular form of schooling in Alaska, can be done through the use of home based charters or independently. The University of Alaska has a branch located in Eagle River and there is also a local Bible College.

Eagle River’s winter temperatures range from 0-20 degrees.  In summer, temperatures typically run from 50-70 degrees farenheit.   Eagle River has beautiful summers with long days. On summer solstice, June 21 of each year, there is about 19 hours of daylight. Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year and there are lots of festivities and celebration to go along with it!!
